Let Renewable Diesel Fuel Your Future

Mabanaft aims to play a key role in helping the industry transition away from traditional fossil fuels to new, cleaner energy sources. Supplying Renewable Diesel (HVO) is an essential step in the journey.

Renewable Diesel (HVO) for Cleaner Energy

An easier and more efficient way to reduce carbon emissions

We are committed to reducing carbon footprints and supporting a cleaner environment through our Renewable Diesel activities. We aim to deliver innovative and efficient solutions that meets our customers’ needs while contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Renewable Diesel meets the BS EN 15940 fuel specification and is classified as a drop-in fuel replacement for fossil diesel with a very similar chemical structure and even better cold properties. This chemical similarity allows Renewable Diesel to be used in its pure form or mixed with conventional diesel and/or biodiesel. No engine modifications are needed for adoption, and a wide range of vehicle manufacturers have already approved it for usage in their engines.

Furthermore, Mabanaft Limited is certified under ISCC-EU and the UK’s voluntary Renewable Fuel Assurance Scheme (RFAS), enabling Mabanaft to ensure sustainability standards are met across our fuel supply chain, and provide voluntary certificates of sustainability to our customers.

The acronym HVO stands for Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil and dates to a time when vegetable oils were common feedstocks in production. The term HVO no longer accurately describes the origin of Renewable Diesel - as wastes, residues, and advanced biomass feedstocks are also commonly used in production - but both terms are still used.

The benefits of using Renewable Diesel?

  • Made from renewable, non-fossil feedstocks
  • Provides up to 90% greenhouse gas emission saving1
  • Can be used in its pure form as a drop-in fuel, or mixed with conventional fossil diesel and FAME
  • No engine modifications required for use2
  • Higher cetane number vs fossil diesel, resulting in better fuel burn and engine performance
  • Excellent cold flow properties and superior shelf life vs fossil diesel
  • Free from FAME, sulphur, aromatics impurities and metals3
  • Meets BS EN 15940

[2] HVO is chemically similar to conventional fossil diesel BS EN 590 Diesel, meets BS EN 15940 and is approved by a wide range of vehicle manufacturers. Please check this for your vehicle, and if you are uncertain, please consult your vehicle manufacturer.

How ‘renewable’ is Renewable Diesel?

Renewable Diesel is produced from renewable and sustainable biomass sources such as vegetable oils, animal fats, and waste oils as listed under the Renewable Energy Directive.

One of the main benefits of using Renewable Diesel is its reduced carbon emissions. This renewable fuel enables Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions savings up to 90% compared to conventional fossil diesel, making it a more environmentally friendly option. Renewable Diesel can also reduce local tailpipe emissions, thanks to its higher cetane number versus traditional diesel.

Exact GHG emission savings will depend on the feedstocks and production methods used in creating the fuel, but for Renewable Diesel being produced from waste and residue feedstocks, typical GHG emission savings range between 80 - 90%, as based on the methodology set out by RED.

Renewable Diesel Properties and Operational Benefits

Overall, renewable diesel provides a cleaner and more sustainable fuel option for transportation and other diesel-powered equipment, and with added operational benefits due to its superior properties.

  • Higher Cetane and Boiling Point means:
    • More efficient fuel burn
    • Improved engine performance
    • Potential to reduce engine noise
  • Improved Cold Properties mean:
    • Reduced risk of gelling, filter plugging, and clouding compared to fossil diesel and FAME.
  • Higher Energy Content versus FAME means:
    • Improved fuel economy for biofuel usage
  • Higher Oxidative Stability means:
    • Reduced fuel degradation
    • Extended shelf life
  • Reduced Impurities4 means:
    • Lower risk of oil contamination, injector fouling and filter plugging
